The knee is made up of three joint complex; the thigh bone (femur), the shin (tibia) and a bone in front (patella). A knee placed under too much pressure will fail and the cartilage and ligaments that support and cushion the joint can be damaged. Ligament sprains and tears are common and can occur during sudden activities or during sports.


  • Pain around either side of the knee joint or inside the knee
  • Vague pain around the front of the knee
  • Clicking or crepitus on movement
  • Locking of the joint
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Pain or inability climbing stairs or walking uphill
  • Painful running
  • Limping
