The Intervertebral (between the spinal bones) discs are a type of hardened fibre which act as a shock absorber and allow movement of the spine. A disc that is in good condition allows the spinal nerves to travel through the spine and supply signals to skin, muscles and organs throughout the body.
A disc injury can occur due to physical stress and often happens when you bend forwards and twist at the same time. The lower back discs are also injured when you pick up something from the floor using your back instead of bending the hips and legs.
Symptoms can include arm or leg pain, changes in skin sensitivity and sharp "shooting" pain, numbness or tingling.
Sciatica is an irritation of the sciatic nerve at the levels L3-L5 in the low back.
Experienced Chiropractors can get our patients out of pain, moving better and avoid surgery where appropriate.
Surgery and invasive techniques should only be used if conservative treatments have been tried first. Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) is an approach to the treatment & management of musculoskeletal conditions which can release tension to tight muscles and restore activity for "sleepy" muscles. DNS can restore spinal balance to the spine & muscles to improve strength and reduce injuries & damage to discs.
What can be done?
Firstly, an assessment needs to be completed by a chiropractor before your consider invasive medical procedures or spinal surgery. If our Chiropractors can help you, gentle techniques are used to reduce pain and inflammation and rehabilitation and exercises to support and strengthen back and core muscles.
If you’re thinking of surgery, have you tried natural, safe Chiropractic yet?
