Lower back pain affects 80% of the population at some point in their lifetime and 60 million working days are lost each year due to lower back pain. Symptoms such as abdominal pain or (sciatica) pain down the leg may be referred from the lower back.

Non-specific back pain lasts weeks, and there may be periods that there is no pain. but the underlying cause has not disappeared. People become used to the pain and continue suffering when there may be an answer.

Research indicates that structural conditions such as spondylolisthesis or disc lesions are not always the cause of pain lower in the back.


  • Pain may be located in the lower back or elsewhere; abdomen, hamstrings, feet.
  • Nagging, vague pain
  • Worse with coughing or sneezing
  • Decreased movement
  • Pain with daily activities
  • Stiffness and tightness
  • Clicking or crepitus
  • Muscle spasm
  • Numbness and tingling in the lower back, buttock, thighs or feet

Lower Back Pain conditions:

  • Facet dysfunction (joint misalignment)
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Disc lesion; bulge, sequestration
  • Arthritis
  • Lumbar spondylolisthesis
  • Neurological
  • Sciatica

Advice on pain in the lower back:

  • Do not bend down and twist when lifting anything!
  • Use your knees to bend down to pick up objects from the floor (even light objects)
  • Perform squat exercises in your daily routine to "wake up" your gluteal muscles.  These will help your posture and decrease pressure on your low back.
  • If you are desk-bound at work, be sure to get out of your chair every hour and perform stretches given by your chiropractor.

Treatment usually consists of manipulation to improve the function, alignment and flexibility of the spine and other joints. Massage helps release muscle tension and restore correct movement patterns. Exercises will be given to stabilise any problem areas and other advice such as altered movement patterns, posture and lifestyle changes will be given to increase the rate of recovery.
