During pregnancy, extra loads on the spine and pelvis can cause pain and stiffness. Gentle chiropractic care helps prepare your body for its new state, pre and post pregnancy.

Studies have found that about half of all expectant mothers will develop low-back pain at some point during their pregnancies [1-3]. This is especially true during late pregnancy, when the baby's head presses down on a woman's back, legs, and buttocks, even irritating her sciatic nerve.

Pre Pregnancy Labour

Chiropractors are able to manually apply light force to the back region, placing the muscles and spine back into a balanced position. Special supports are used so pregnant ladies can lie on their stomach or we use techniques when she is side lying.

Chiropractic care prior to conception prepares the body to be strong, supple, and as balanced as possible to carry the pregnancy.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can not only help shorten labour time because the pelvis and birth canal has been aligned, it also promotes a more regular menstrual cycle and optimal uterine function.4

Post Pregnancy Labour

The after effects of labour can be tough on a mother’s body as it can leave the body completely out of alignment. Chiropractic care helps restore the body back to its pre-baby state through spinal adjustments, while encouraging healthy eating, correct posture and plenty of rest.

CASE STUDY – Patient with Sciatica

Battersea and Wandsworth Chiropractors started managing a first time pregnant lady who was recommended by her doctor to see a chiropractor, due to some hip pain she was having.

She said that she did not book in straight away and left it until she started having really painful Sciatica. It was so painful that she struggled to walk after getting out of bed.

During the Consultation, our chiropractor carried out nerve and joint tests, a full posture check, a musculoskeletal test and full medical history analysis. Our patient mentioned that she was also suffering from headaches and indigestion. The chiropractic assistant did a follow up call after her first treatment to find out if she had noticed any changes. She stated that she had slept without any pain for the first time since her pregnancy and she hadn't had a headache yet.

She was scheduled for an induction as her doctor had said she was overdue. She saw the chiropractor for another check up and that same evening she gave birth. Mother and baby recovered well and they both see our chiropractor regularly.

As pregnancy progresses women gain weight and the load to the spine becomes unbalanced which can cause pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic adjustments are incredibly safe and excellent for easing the back pain of pregnancy and keeping your pelvis aligned.
