Gentle, Supportive Care for Your Baby’s Comfort and Development
At Battersea and Wandsworth Chiropractors, we understand how important your baby’s early development is — and how naturally concerned parents are about ensuring everything is progressing smoothly. Many parents are curious about whether chiropractic care may play a supportive role in their baby’s comfort, posture, or general wellbeing.
While research into chiropractic care for babies is still developing, there is growing interest in how gentle manual approaches might affect the function of the nervous system. One leading voice in this field is Dr. Heidi Haavik, a neuroscientist and chiropractor, whose research explores how chiropractic care may influence brain-body communication. You can watch her explain more here: Heidi Haavik video on chiropractic care
Why Might Parents Consider Chiropractic for Their Baby?
The birth process — even when straightforward — can be physically demanding for both mother and baby. Some parents report noticing signs such as:
A preference for turning the head one way
Discomfort when lying on their back
Seeming unsettled during feeding or sleeping
General fussiness without a clear cause
If you have concerns about your baby’s comfort or development, it’s always best to speak with your GP, midwife, or health visitor. Chiropractic care is not a substitute for medical assessment, but some parents choose to consult chiropractors trained in treating children as part of a broader support approach.
What Does Chiropractic Care for Babies Involve?
Chiropractic care for babies is very gentle and uses light fingertip pressure — no manipulation or forceful adjustments. The techniques are tailored to your baby’s age, size, and needs. Sessions are calm, non-invasive, and always focused on comfort and communication with parents throughout.
What Does the Research Say?
According to Dr. Haavik’s overview of the current evidence:
Chiropractic care for babies is considered safe when delivered by appropriately trained professionals.
Some early studies suggest changes in neurological function following care, but more research is needed before any conclusions can be made about clinical outcomes.
Importantly, the current body of evidence does not support chiropractic care as a treatment for specific infant conditions, such as colic or reflux. Therefore, we do not claim to “treat” these issues. Speak with us about the role in supporting the spine.
Instead, the focus is on assessing spinal function and offering gentle care that may support the nervous system’s communication with the rest of the body.
What to Expect at an Appointment
At your baby’s first appointment, we’ll begin with a detailed conversation about your pregnancy, birth experience, and any observations you’ve made about your baby’s behaviour, movement or posture.
We’ll then gently examine your baby’s spinal alignment, muscle tone, and reflexes using age-appropriate techniques. If chiropractic care is considered appropriate, we will explain the approach and obtain full informed consent before proceeding.
Plenty of time is allowed for feeding, cuddles, and settling — your baby’s comfort and wellbeing are our priority.
Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Babies?
Yes — when delivered by a practitioner with specific training in children’s care, chiropractic is considered very safe. We follow UK regulatory guidance, maintain strong professional standards, and always communicate openly with your wider healthcare team where helpful.
